THE DESCENDANTS OF HENRY HUFFMAN, JR.

Henry Huffman, Jr. was a direct ancestor of the author, and this section of the book is written about him and his descendants, most of whom until recently, have remained in Barren and the surrounding counties of south central Kentucky. During my research on his line, I was unable to find any lawyers, judges, or doctors, and not even one politician among them. In fact, for several generations following Henry, there existed but few professionals of any kind. Almost to a man, they were farmers, and they depended solely upon the land to make their living and to support their families. Many were excellent carpenters, who not only built their own homes, but made most of their own furniture as well, many pieces of which still exist today in the homes of various family members. Many were talented musically, playing various instruments and even teaching music. Most were of the Baptist faith and practiced their religion. Among the Huffmans covered in this section are three veterans of the War of 1812 and five Civil War veterans (all Union Army).

Henry Huffman, Jr. was the first born son of Johannes Henrich Hoffman and Elizabeth Catherine Schuster and the fifth of nine children. Although he was the elder of the three brothers that came to Barren County, Kentucky, he was the last one to leave Virginia, selling his 100-acre farm there in September of 1803. Henry was 55 years old when he decided to head west with his family, and one can only speculate as to what factors would cause him to pull up stakes and leave his home at that point in his life. Perhaps it was a desire to be closer to his blood relations. Both of his parents, German immigrants to Virginia about 1743, had been dead for almost 40 years. A younger brother, Lewis, had died in Virginia earlier that same year in 1803, and his two remaining brothers had left home for Kentucky several years earlier. Teter moved his family to Mercer County in 1788, and Ambrose left Virginia in 1797 to settle in Green County (now Barren County). Perhaps what also drew him was the promise of plentiful, cheap, fertile land. Much of Virginia’s tillable land had been exhausted due to years of exploitative farming practices. Another factor may have been the pressure from an expanding population in Virginia. And lastly, there was the general belief among many thousands of pioneer families in Virginia and North Carolina that Kentucky represented a promised land, a romantic, nearly mythical paradise. Whatever the reasons for his leaving, Henry Huffman, his wife, Margaret, and seven of his children arrived in Barren County, Kentucky near the end of 1803, where he purchased 218 acres of land in the southeastern part of the county near the farm of his brother, Ambrose. A son, Nimrod, the only member of the family to remain behind in Virginia, would join them a few years later. The communities that would spring up in this area would be called Nobob, Eighty Eight, Summer Shade, and Temple Hill.

Henry Huffman, Jr., the eldest son of Johannes Henrich Hoffman and Elizabeth Catherina Schuster, was a second generation American, born in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1748. On December 30, 1768, he married Margaret Harnsberger, daughter of Stephen Harnsberger, and they had eleven children, six boys and five girls, all born in Virginia. The children were as follows: Moses, Nimrod, Rosanna ("Rosey"), Anna, Mary ("Polly"), Sarah ("Sally"), Jemimah, Thomas, Cornelius, Ambrose Jr., and Teter Jr. The latter two sons were named after their uncles.

Henry Huffman was a farmer, and near the end of 1803, at the age of 55 years old, he moved his family from Madison County, Virginia to Barren County, Kentucky to settle on land near his brother, Ambrose, who had migrated there six years earlier. It is almost certain that he came to Kentucky by wagon through the Cumberland Gap along the famous Wilderness Trail from Virginia through the Appalachians. The early settlers to Kentucky generally took one of two major routes. One route followed the Ohio River into Kentucky, and many early settlers who arrived by this route came from Maryland and Pennsylvania. They left Pittsburgh and floated by flat-bottom boat down the Ohio River to Kentucky. Most pioneers, however, came to Kentucky through the Cumberland Gap, which was of critical importance to the settlement of the West, because it was the only natural route through the Appalachian Mountains. Once through the Gap, which is located in the southeast part of the state, they proceeded north and westward to the rich farming areas of the Bluegrass, the Ohio River Basin, and the western regions of the state.

The year 1803 is the last time his name appears on the tithe-tables of Madison County, Virginia, where he was called "Henry Hoffman, Clk", which probably indicates that he was Clerk of the County in that year. The first time his name appears in the record books for the state of Kentucky is December 17, 1803, where it is recorded in Barren County Deed Book "B," Page 45, that Henry Huffman purchased a 218 acre tract of land from William Courts and his wife, Clarey, for $435.00 cash in hand. The tract was located on the waters of Skagg's Creek near the present community of Nobob, Kentucky. Most of Henry's family came with him to Kentucky, except for his son, Nimrod, who remained behind in Madison County, Virginia. The oldest son, Moses, had died earlier in Virginia in 1796. Nimrod Huffman would later follow the family to Barren County, Kentucky, where Deed Books show he purchased land in 1811.

Henry Huffman was 87 years old when he died in 1835. His wife, Margaret, died three years earlier, in 1832. Although the location of their graves is not known, they are probably buried with unmarked stones in one of two or three Huffman family cemeteries located in the Nobob-Eighty Eight area of Barren County. Before his death, he distributed most of his land among his sons, who continued to live and farm in that part of the state. His Will, dated January 14, 1832, and probated in Barren County during the January Court of 1835, is on file at the County Clerk's Office. It states as follows:

Will of Henry Huffman

In the name of God, Amen. I, Henry Huffman,

of the County of Barren, State of Kentucky, being

old and infirm and calling to mind the certainty of

Death, have thought proper and to dispose of my Property in

manner herein after named: It is my Will and desire

that after my Decease all my just Debts be paid.

Second. I give to my Daughter, Anne Huffman,

my Dwelling House with all my Bedding and Furniture

of every description that is in said House, and also my

Kitchen House and all the Furniture that is in it

to do as she may think proper with it during her

Natural Life. If anything left at her Decease to be

divided between her two Sisters Sally Holtzclaw and Polly

Tudor. Third. I give unto my Son, Teter Huffman,

my Tract of Land wherein I now reside, lying on

the Waters of Nobob Creek, containing about one hundred

and thirty Acres, also my Farming Tools of every

description, and Stock of all kinds consisting of

Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Hogs, as I have heretofore

given unto my four other Sons, Nimrod Huffman,

Cornelius Huffman, Thomas Huffman and Ambrose Huffman,

all that I intend giving them and do not design

giving them any more. Also my Daughters,

Jemima Ritter and Rosey Tanner, I have given their

Portions heretofore. Lastly, I constitute and appoint

my Son, Teter Huffman, Executor of this my Last Will

and Testament and wish him to give me security.

The following is excerpted from a series of articles on "Barren County Water Mills and Water Courses" written by Hon. W. L. Porter and published in the Glasgow Times:

“David Ritter erected several water mills along Skagg's Creek in the early 1800's. In fact, at one time there were thirty-seven mills operating in Barren County powered by water impounded in dams across the creeks. These mills were mostly used to grind corn, but some were used to grind wheat as well. When wheat was ground, it was ground on the same stones as the corn, and housewives sifted the flour in the same sifter as the corn, separating the bran from the flour, which consisted of the "shorts" as well as the "white" all mixed together, what we now call whole wheat flour. When a farmer carried a bag of wheat to some mills, he would carry three sacks - one for the white flour, one for the "shorts" or seconds, and one for the bran.

"This creek (Skaggs) runs south then and to the south of the village of Nobob, Ky. The next mill to this was erected by D. B. Ritter five miles south of the Frazier Mill, more than one hundred years ago and continued more than seventy-five years. The next mill was the property of David Ritter; this, too, was more than a century old and was owned by James Glover fifty years ago and is generally known as Glover's Mill and was one of the best on the creek; it is now owned and operated by Fish Ritter, a descendant of David Ritter, who erected the mill. About eighty years ago, Bowman Ritter erected a mill on this creek, five miles below the Glover mill and above the bridge over the Glasgow and Tompkinsville road, three miles east of Temple Hill; here, one end of the dam abutted against the bluff on the south side of the creek. This mill ceased operations some seventy-five years ago.

"After passing under the bridge on the Glasgow and Tompkinsville road, the creek flows south-west until it reaches the Wilkerson ford. Just above this ford, the Wilkersons erected a mill for grinding corn in 1835; this mill remained in the Wilkerson family for upwards of seventy-five years, and passed into the ownership of Mr. Sabens, but was abandoned in 1910. Two miles below this mill, the creek makes a bend of more than a mile and flows back within four hundred feet of the upper end of the bend. The fall of the creek around the bend was about ten feet, and David B. Ritter excavated a canal across the neck of the bend and erected a

large mill on the lower end, both for grinding corn and wheat, also a saw mill was built about the year 1840
and Ritter operated it successfully during his life and it is now operated as well as owned by Harlin Baxter."

Notes for THOMAS HUFFMAN:

Thomas Huffman (1782-1872) was one of ten children born in Culpeper County, Virginia to Henry Huffman, Jr. and Margaret Harnsberger. In 1803, when Thomas was a young man of 22 years old and still a bachelor, his father sold off their property in Virginia and moved the family to Barren County, Kentucky. Once there, they settled on lands located along Nobob Creek near his brother, Ambrose Huffman, who had preceded him to Kentucky. In 1820, at 38 years of age, Thomas Huffman married Olive Pedigo, 22, daughter of Henry Pedigo and Leah Cochran. They would have 12 children: Catherine (Kitty Bird), Francis Marion, William Henry, Mahulda, Mary Elizabeth, Thomas L., Nancy S., Lucy Jane, Sarah Elizabeth, John Hayden, Louis Francis, and Jonathan Clark.

Deed Book "K", Page 338 of Barren County shows that on March 12, 1828, "...said Henry Huffman and Margaret his wife for and in consideration of the natural love and consideration given...do give and convey unto the said Thomas Huffman a certain tract or parcel of land, lying and being in the County of Barren, on the waters of Nobob Creek (north side) containing sixty nine acres, more or less.."

Thomas Huffman was an early member of the Goodhope Baptist Church in the Nobob area, founded in July 1838. Church records show he was baptized in November 1842 along with his wife, Olive. Three of his children, Kitty Bird, Marion, and Mahulda, were also baptized there in September 1842.

The 1850 U.S. Census for Barren County shows Thomas Huffman, 67, a Farmer, his wife, Olive, 52, a Housekeeper, and seven of their children living in the Nobob area. By the 1870 U.S. Census we find an elderly Thomas Huffman, now 87, and his wife, Olive, 72, living with their youngest son, Jonathan Clark Huffman, and his family at Nobob, Kentucky. Jonathan Clark Huffman is listed as a Farmer and Head of the Household.

The grave of Thomas Huffman (spelled "Hoofman" on the headstone), along with the graves of many of his children, is located in the old Huffman-Bellamy Cemetery located about one and a half miles east of Eighty Eight, Kentucky.

3. Marriage Bond of Thomas Huffman and Olive Pedigo dated January 1, 1920.

War Of 1812 Veteran.

Thomas Huffman volunteered in Capt. Jobe Glover's Company of the 4th Mounted Infantry, Kentucky Volunteers, commanded by Lt. Col. Young Ewing under Gen. Hopkins. He was 30 years old and still a bachelor when he enlisted. After joining at Glasgow, Kentucky, his unit marched 230 miles to Ft. Harrison, Indiana where he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on October 30, 1812. His term of service was from September 18th to October 30, 1812 – forty three days, plus an additional eleven days for travel, fifty four days in all. Military records show that he was paid $8.00 per month plus 40 cents per day for "use, etc. of his horse."

In December 1850, Thomas applied to the U.S. Government for Bounty Land, provided for by the Congressional Act of September 28, 1850, which distributed land warrants to certain officers and soldiers who had engaged in military service. He was awarded 40 acres (Warrant No. 18.594). He obtained additional Bounty Land in 1855, when he applied for and was awarded 120 acres (Warrant No. 29683). In his second application of March 1855, instead of signing his signature, he made his mark (X), which was duly witnessed by his neighbors. However, the U.S. Government returned the application asking for an explanation as to why he could sign his name in 1850 but could only make his mark in the 1855 application. The explanation, found in a letter from local county officials, dated September 3, 1855, states that ".the reason for his failing to sign his name in said declaration instead of making his mark (X) thereto was that it being quite a cold day his hands was cold, and not being accustomed to writing, being old and feeble, 72 years of age and not very expert, he requested someone to write it for him, supposing it would make no difference for him." This time the letter was signed with the scratchy signature of Thomas Huffman.

On April 7, 1871, Thomas Huffman, then almost 89 years old, applied for a Survivor's Pension of $8.00 per month under the newly granted act by Congress on February 14, 1871. However, his application (Claim No. 9350) was rejected on November 18, 1871 by reason of "insufficient time in service", being fifty-four days, instead of the minimum requirement of sixty days. Thomas Huffman died at his residence on January 16, 1872 at the age of 90.

In October 1879, six years after Thomas's death, his widow, Olive Huffman, filed a Claim for Widow's Pension (granted by the Congressional Act of March 9, 1878). Olive was now 82 years old. In her claim application there is a description of Thomas at the time of his enlistment in 1812: "about 20 years of age, born in Virginia, 5ft 10 inches in height, blue eyed, auburn hair, fair skin, a Farmer." (Widow's Claim No. 38295) Her claim was approved on January 10, 1880 for $8.00 per month, retroactive to March 9, 1878. (Certificate No. 28551) Olive Huffman died on April 24, 1882. She was 84.

Note: At the time of her death, Olive was living with her son, Jonathan Clark Huffman, and his wife at Eighty-Eight, Kentucky. Following is a letter written shortly after her death by Clark Huffman, requesting reimbursement for her burial expenses:

Ten years later, she married Thomas Huffman, and her brother, Jesse Pedigo, cosigned the Surity Bond along with Thomas Huffman. Zacheus Quisenberry performed the wedding.

Ambrose Huffman, Jr. was the tenth child born to Henry Huffman, Jr. and Margaret Harnsberger. He was named for his uncle, Ambrose Huffman, the Revolutionary War veteran. On December 3, 1815, Ambrose Huffman Jr. married his first cousin, Elizabeth Huffman, the youngest daughter of his uncle, Teter Huffman and Jemima Barlow. He was 28 and she was 27 years old. Together, they would have eight children, six girls and two boys: Wyrinda, Louisa, Lucinda, Albert, Nancy, Patty Ann, Henry, and Eliza.

Deed Book "K", Page 338, of Barren Co. shows that on November 29, 1825, Ambrose Huffman, Jr. purchased 103 acres of land, located on the waters of Nobob Branch of Skagg's Creek, from his father, Henry Huffman, Jr., for $130.00

Austin Ford was a farmer and a subscription schoolteacher in Barren County. He and his wife, Kitty Bird

Huffman, owned two tracts of land, 81 acres and 175 acres, located at Glover's and Fallen Timber Creeks (Elbow Springs), approximately two miles northwest of Eighty Eight, Kentucky. In addition to being a housewife and mother, Kitty Bird taught piano. They were Baptists.

He was only 44 years old when he died in 1864, at Camp Joseph Underwood in Barren County, Kentucky. He was accidentally shot in the leg while on military maneuvers and bled to death.

His funeral was held at the Beech Grove Baptist Church. Barren County Deed Books show that five years after his death, the 175-acre tract of land was sold to Mary Rowland in 1869. Kitty Bird lived to be 84 years old before she died in 1905.

Christine Ford Mathews said of her ancestor: "When he returned from the Mexican War, he had a "towwad" in his left leg (a bullet slug comprised of chewed newspaper mixed with gun powder), which he carried in his leg until his death."

Notes for FRANCIS MARION HUFFMAN:

Francis Marion Huffman, known simply as Marion Huffman, was the eldest son of Thomas Huffman and Olive Pedigo. On June 26, 1844, he married his first cousin, Nancy Jane Pedigo, daughter of Henry Lewis Pedigo and Judith Farley. Marion was 22 and Nancy was 19 years old.

Civil War Veteran (Union Army).

Marion Huffman, together with his two younger brothers, Louis Francis Huffman and Jonathan Clark Huffman, and his first cousin, Stacy B. Huffman, enlisted in Capt. Chenowith's Company of the Home Guard on September 24, 1861 at Camp Joseph Underwood in Barren County, Kentucky. Also enlisting at the same time were Albert and George Baldock, first cousins and neighbors of the Huffmans. This unit later became Company "E" of the 9th Reg't of Kentucky Infantry. At 39 years of age, Marion Huffman was officially mustered in as a Private on November 26, 1861 at Camp Boyle in Columbia, Kentucky for a term of three years. He left at home a wife and five children. A little over four months later, on April 7, 1862, during the second day of fighting at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, he was wounded in the right foot and had to be carried from the field. He returned home on sick leave and remained there until he received a Disability Discharge on February 10, 1863. Twelve years later, in 1875, he would die from complications of the wound suffered at Shiloh. His U.S. Army record listed him as 5'8'' tall, dark complexion, black eyes, and dark hair. His occupation was a farmer.

In the Application for Invalid Pension, dated February 19, 1866, his condition is described thusly: "At the Battle of Shiloh (or Pittsburgh Landing) on the second day of the Battle, on Monday, he was wounded in the right foot, and was carried off the Battlefield. A minnie ball of two ounces struck the left side of his right foot, paling through the same, shattering and tearing from his foot many bones. That he had to submit to a surgical operation and have one of the large bones of his foot taken out, being so shattered by the ball as to prevent healing without it's entire removal. That having lost the support of the bones of his foot, he has to walk on one side of his foot, and has but little control of the same. Has had to use crutches for over two years and can only walk without them in a crippled condition. That he has little or no strength in said foot, so that in following the plow, chopping, and all other manual labor to be done on the farm, he finds himself so overcome by the extra exertion that he is compelled to rest by the time he gets one fourth of one days work done."

The supporting documentation, which describes in some detail the nature of his injury, is signed by Dr. Dickey and Dr. Fowler, and concludes that: "In our opinion, from the cause above stated, the disability of the said Huffman to obtain his subsistence from manual labor, being by occupation a farmer, amounts to three fourths." Marion Huffman was granted a Disability Pension of $6.00 per month (Certificate No. 65816).

Marion Huffman lived essentially a cripple for the next eight years until he finally succumbed to his wound at the age of 53 years old. A sworn statement from Dr. John D. Woods recalls: " that on or about the 22 day of May 1874 he was called on to see Francis M. Huffman, and that he found him with extreme gangrene of the right leg and thigh and eventually with pyremia, the result of an old gun shot wound, of which disease he died on the 24th of May 1874."

Nancy J. Huffman filed a Widow's Application for Army Pension on June 11, 1874, in which she stated that she was 48 years old, a resident of Barren County, with no children under the age of sixteen years. Her Post Office was listed as Glover's Creek, Metcalfe County, and her domicile was described as near the public road leading from Glasgow to Burkesville, Kentucky about four miles from Glover's Creek Post Office. A Beers and Lanagan Map of Barren County, dated 1879, shows a "N. Huffman" living approximately one half mile north of the town of Eighty Eight. She received a pension of $8.00 / month (Certificate No. 171917) until her death on November 2, 1900 at age 75.

Author's Note: One can only speculate as to the motivating reasons why Marion Huffman, at age 39, would leave a wife and five children at home and join the Union Army to fight in the War of Rebellion. Certainly no one would have blamed him for staying at home at his age and with his family responsibilities. Did he feel that strongly about the Union cause, or could he have been lured by the promise of Bounty Money for enlisting? No one will ever know for sure, but I believe that certainly part of the reason for his enlisting was a desire to watch over and protect his two younger brothers, Louis, age 22, and Clark, age 19. Ironically, within a few months of their joining the army, Lewis died of measles in an army camp at Columbia, Kentucky, and Clark, also ill, was sent to the Army Hospital in Louisville where he would be separated from his unit for the remainder of the war.

Notes for JOHN HAYDEN HUFFMAN:

Hayden Huffman (1837-1932) was the 10th child born to Thomas Huffman and Olive Pedigo. In 1861, at the age of 24, he moved from Barren County, Kentucky to Warrick County, Indiana, where he lived until his death at the age of 95 years old. He was a farmer, and his homeplace was situated on 96 acres of land located in Section 7, Range 8 West, Tier 6 South, located south of Boonsville, Indiana. On News Years Eve of 1868, he married Martha Hines, and they had a son, William D. Huffman, and a daughter, Theodosia Huffman. When Martha died in 1872, he married her sister, Berian O. Hines, the following year, on July 17, 1873, and they had seven children: George Marion, Martha, Cora, Edna, Walter Alvin, Charles Clark, and Elsie Mae. Hayden Huffman was a devout member of the Baptist Church and for a time was a singing evangelist.

OBITUARY

John Hayden Huffman, son of Thomas and Olive Huffman, was born in Barren County, Kentucky, May 23, 1837, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Homer Pate, November 15, 1932, aged 95 years, 5 months and 17 days.

He came to the State of Indiana in 1861 and has since lived in Warrick County, living 58 years on the same farm.

He was married to Martha Hines December 31, 1868, and to this union was born a son and a daughter. The wife passed away 60 years ago today and the little daughter soon followed her. The son, W.D. Huffman, died February 15, 1929.

On July 17, 1873, he married Berian O. Hines and to this union was born 3 sons and 4 daughters, two dying in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Cora Burlton, October 17, 1913. His wife passed away February 10, 1925. He leaves two sons, A.M. Huffman, Arcola Illinois; W.A. Huffman of Chandler; two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Edwards, of Ft. Branch, and Mrs. Edna Pate, of this place; ten grandchildren; and four great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was converted at the age of 16 and became a member of the Beech Grove Baptist Church. He was a charter member of Cypress Baptist Church and helped in the erection of the building of Mt. Pleasant M. E. Church. He was a great lover of music and in his early days was a singing evangelist and taught singing schools. He came of a line of soldiers, his grandfather being a Revolutionary soldier, his father in the War of 1812, and five brothers went through the Civil War in the Union Army, he remaining out to care for his parents.

Many times he had expressed a wish to enter into rest and at

8:45 o'clock Tuesday night he passed away as quietly as he had lived, his pure upright christian life is a lasting testimony that he is with the Lord.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Pate with Rev.

H.E. Ketcham in charge. Herbert and Olive O'Neil sang "No Night There" and "Face To Face". The pallbearers were Kenneth Burlton, Harold Huffman, Chester and Herbert O'Neil and Paul Hines. Burial was in Ellis cemetery.

Author's Note:The obituary was probably written by family members and does contain some errors which are corrected as follows: The Revolutionary War soldier was not Hayden Huffman's grandfather but his great-uncle, Ambrose Huffman. He had three brothers who served in the Civil War, not five. The statement that he remained out of the Civil War in order to care for his parents doesn't ring completely true either, since he had already left his home in Kentucky and moved to Warrick County, Indiana very near the start of the war in 1861.

The following letter was written to an elderly Hayden Huffman by Logan Baldock, requesting some information concerning Hayden’s uncle, Ambrose Huffman, Jr. Logan Baldock was instrumental in obtaining War of 1812 markers for the gravesites of both Ambrose and Thomas Huffman.

My Dear Sir,
Perhaps you will be a little surprised to hear from me but I am writing to ask
a few questions. By way of introduction I am the youngest son of Albert Baldock.

Recently we placed a soldier's headstone and bronze marker on the grave of
Ambrose Huffman, father's grandfather, and brother of your father. We are anxious
to honor the memory of your father in the same way. They served together in the
War of 1812.

Now, do you remember the date of his birth? We have the date of his death,
Jan. 17, 1872. What is the name of the graveyard where he is buried? Do you know
whatever became of his old Dutch Bible? This old Bible was brought from Germany
 by Jno Hoffman the immigrant in 1714 and would be highly prized if it is still in
existence. I have been told it was sold to a museum somewhere.

Trust you are in good health. Father is still living, will be 90 years old in July.
If you will please answer these questions, I will be very thankful.

Notes for JONATHAN CLARK HUFFMAN:

Jonathan Clark Huffman (1842 - 1915) was the youngest of twelve children born to Thomas Huffman and Olive Pedigo and grew up working the family farm located near the town of Eighty Eight in Barren County, Kentucky. In 1867, at age 25, he married Mary Jane Pedigo, 22, daughter of Charles Pedigo and Matilda Pedigo. Mary Jane's mother, Matilda Pedigo, was a niece of Clark Huffman's mother, Olive Pedigo. Clark and Mary Jane had the following ten children: Laura, Mattie, Victor, Annie, Florence, Lizzie, Charlie, Eddie (died when he was 5 years old), Hershel, and Woodie.

The 1870 U.S. Census for Barren County shows Jonathan Huffman as a 27 yr. old Farmer and Head of the household, with a wife, Mary J., and a 1 year old child named Laura. His parents, Thomas and Olive Huffman, then 87 and 72 years old respectively, were listed as living in his home, which was located near Eighty Eight, Kentucky.

In addition to farming, he was a skilled carpenter, and also operated a brick kiln, located on the family homeplace, where he manufactured many of the red clay brick used in local building construction. The old Edmonton State Bank Building, no longer a bank but still located on the square in Edmonton, Kentucky, was constructed from brick fired in Clark Huffman's kiln. In 1896, five years after the death of his wife, Mary Jane, he married a second time to Annie Ora Farrell, daughter of Anderson and Mary Farrell of Metcalfe County, Kentucky. The wedding took place at the home of Mrs. Farrell and was performed by the Rev. Reynolds. Clark Huffman was 54 years old and Annie was 20 when they were married. Together, they had one daughter, Manie Huffman, born December 30, 1896.

In his later years Clark Huffman suffered from poor health which greatly interfered with his ability to work at any type of manual labor. On July 19, 1890, at the age of 48 years old, he applied to the Federal Government for an Invalid Pension, claiming that he was unable to earn support due to a disease of his left side and of his feet, which he had contracted during his service in the Civil War. (Pension Claim No. 892.608) A Physicians Affidavit, dated December of 1890 and signed by Dr. S.A. Taylor, stated that, "based on a professional examination performed on said Clark Huffman, he suffers from pain from a continuous dull aching in his left side, the result of pneumonia contracted when he was in the army during

the Civil War, and that he spits up a good deal of mucus all the time which increases when he has a slight cold. His feet sweat all the time in cold or hot weather as a result of scalded feet caused from hard marching. Both afflictions are deemed to be permanent."

Actually, the pain in his left side was not the result of pneumonia as was previously believed. On April 18, 1891, he was examined again, this time by the U.S. Surgeon's Board in Glasgow, Kentucky, as part of the same pension application process, and their findings were that the disease of the side was actually heart disease, caused by an enlarged right ventricle. His lungs were deemed to be healthy. The report went on to say that his feet looked tender and sensitive, and that he complains of intolerable itching and burning in summer. He claims it to be the result of forced marches in hot weather. The Board recommended a disability rating of 8/18ths, or almost one half. The following conditions were also recorded: Pulse rate, 110; respiration, 18; temperature, 98.5; height, 5 feet 8 inches; weight, 147 pounds; age, 48 years. Clark Huffman was awarded an Invalid Pension of $12.00 per month. (Pension No.701938).

As he got older, Clark Huffman's health continued to decline, and in 1907, when he was 65 years old, he and Annie sold the Huffman farm at Eighty Eight, which included the house and 106 acres of land, to Eugene Bellamy for the sum of $1000.00 cash in hand. They moved their residence to R.F.D. 2, Cave City, Kentucky. An excerpt from a letter written by his physician, Dr. J.C. McCreary, and dated March 1, 1910, illustrates his continuing health problems: "I have been the attending physician on the applicant, Jonathan C. Huffman, during the past two and one-half years and have treated him through two very serious attacks of Heart trouble; the seriousness of which is such that I advised him not to attempt to do manual labor; further at the same time I treated him for "Planter Neuralgia" of the feet, from which he suffered a great deal. Walking or any exercise will cause unbearable pain in his feet."

Clark Huffman died on December 7, 1915 at the age of 73. The attending physician was Dr. W.M. Ewing, and his statement is as follows: "Said Huffman when I was called to see him was suffering from chronic diarrhea, and although I was his medical attendant for only a few weeks, he and the family stated it was of long duration. The cause of this diarrhea was not confirmed by a bacteriological examination. Starvation and weakness from the diarrhea was the sole cause of his death." Clark is buried in the old Huffman-Bellamy Family Cemetery located on the family farm at Eighty Eight. The old two-story farmhouse, located just a short distance from the cemetery, burned down in the 1940's, and today another smaller house stands on the site.

"He was a lover of music and played drum or fife while serving in the Civil War. He was skilled in the use of either and it is believed that he alternated between the two instruments. "Uncle Clark", as he was affectionately called by his neighbors, lived on the farm now owned by Eugene Bellamy (1940), about one mile and a half east of Eighty Eight, where he is buried. He was a devout member of the Baptist Church and led the singing at Beech Grove Church for many years". (A Historical Trip Through Barren County, Kentucky, by Clayton Simmons, 1940's). The fife that he carried in the Civil War is in the possession of the author as well as an old clay brick made at his kiln with the initials J C H imprinted on the face.

Author's Note: A story has been reported, but cannot be substantiated, that sometime around the turn of the century, Clark Huffman, being at the time in need of ready cash, sold the Huffman Family Bible. Supposedly, this was the bible brought over from Germany by Johannes Henrich Hofmann when he immigrated to Virginia in 1743. It was a big heavy book with a large latch on the outside, and recorded inside were the significant dates and events of the family's history. The story goes on that times were hard, and considerable value had been attached to the bible, not just because of its historical significance, but also due to the great amount of gold leaf found throughout its pages. Until such evidence is found to the contrary, the author is inclined to totally dismiss this story as pure invention. In Clark Huffman's Declaration for Invalid Pension, dated July 19, 1890, he states that his house burned in 1878, destroying everything including his Civil War Discharge papers. Again, on May 6, 1911, in a sworn response to the Bureau of Pensions, he stated that the old family bible, which contained his birth record, was destroyed by fire "about 25 to 30 years ago" when his house burned. Although it's titillating for genealogists to picture the old Hoffman Bible as overlooked in some museum's archives, or perhaps secreted away under lock and key in someone's private collection, it's very difficult to accept this premise. If the family bible referred to by Clark Huffman was indeed the original family bible of his great grandfather, Henrich Hofmann, then I believe, as he said, that it was destroyed by fire. If, perchance, that was a different bible, and the old original German bible should still survive today, then I suspect it lies hidden away in some old attic trunk in Virginia.

The grave of Clark Huffman, along with those of his father, Thomas Huffman, and other family members, is in the Huffman-Bellamy Cemetery, located on a small knoll a few hundred yards behind the site of his old homeplace, near Eighty Eight, Kentucky. The following inscription is on his stone: "A light from our own household is gone; A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in our hearts that can never be filled."

Civil War Veteran (Union Army)

Jonathan Clark Huffman's military service during the Civil War was unusual, to say the least. He served in two different Union regiments, the 9th Kentucky Infantry, under his true name, and the 51st Indiana Infantry, using the alias of John H. Taylor. He was honorably discharged under the alias of John Taylor, but, as one might imagine, his circumstances created quite a mix-up with the U.S. Pension Board and required a lot of explanation several years later when he applied for his Civil War Veteran's Pension.

Jonathan Clark Huffman, at age 19, enlisted in Capt. Chenowith's Company of the Home Guard on September 24, 1861, at Camp Joseph Underwood in Barren County, Kentucky. He joined together with his two brothers, Louis Francis Huffman and Francis Marion Huffman, and his three cousins, Stacy Huffman and Albert and George Baldock. Their unit was later incorporated into the U. S. Army as Company "E", 9th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. He was officially mustered in at Camp Boyle in Columbia, Kentucky on November 26, 1861; Reported on "Sick Leave" in Barren County in March of 1862; Continuous reports of "Absent on Sick Leave" until April of 1863, when he was reported as "AWOL since September 29, 1862"; Finally declared as a "Deserter" on October 4, 1863. The charge of Desertion was later dropped. In a deposition taken in support of his Declaration for Pension, dated July 25, 1911, Clark Huffman explained his situation as follows:

"I am 68 and 10/12 years of age ( I was born September 6, 1842). My post office address is Cave City, Ky. I am a farmer. I was born in Barren County, Ky. My parents were Thomas Huffman and his wife Olive, born Pedigo. I am the last of their twelve children, the last born. Our family bible was burned with all other household goods about 25 to 30 years ago. There is no person living who could testify to date of my birth, but I am positive that date of my birth as stated herein is correct, and any statements heretofore made not agreeing with this is in error.

"The first time I ever enlisted in any military service was in the fall of 1861, in Company E, 9th Ky. Vol. Inf. I was with that organization for about a year. After the Battle of Shiloh (in which I participated) I was sent to the hospital at St. Louis, Missouri. I rejoined the regiment and marched through Kentucky to Louisville, Ky. where I was left sick in the hospital. I left with two others to join my company at Bowling Green, Ky. but the regiment was not there; it was at Perryville, Ky.

"I got a sick certificate for 4 weeks from my home doctor; when that expired he gave me another. I sent both to the Company Sergeant, but I heard that he never got either. Before the last one ran out I heard that I was marked up as a deserter and for that reason I was afraid to go back to my company.

"I next enlisted in Company E, 51st Indiana Inf. Those are the only services I have ever had. I have never been connected in any way with the Confederate Army. I never got any bounty except thirteen dollars from my service in Company E, 9th Ky. Vol. Inf. They paid only one month extra pay as an inducement to enlist. I enlisted in Company E, 51st Ind Vol. Inf. at Indianapolis, Ind. I got paid one hundred dollars bounty at the time I enlisted in Company E, 51st Ind. Inf. and I got paid for all the time I served in that regiment. Part of that service I received pay of a Private and part of the time I got the pay of Chief Musician, $25.00 per month. In Company E, 51st Ind. Inf. I served under the name of John H. Taylor.

"No, I did not serve as a hired substitute."

Jonathan Clark Huffman, using the alias John H. Taylor, enlisted in the U.S. Army in September of 1863 and was mustered in at Indianapolis, Indiana on October 17, 1863 with the rank of Recruit Private, by Capt. Jordan of the 51st Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Company "E". He was paid a $100.00 bounty at the time of enlistment. He was listed as 21 years old, gray eyes, dark hair, height 5 ft. 9 in., light complexion, a farmer. He gave his place of birth as Adair County, Kentucky and his address as Vincennes, Indiana. His term of enlistment was for 3 years. After seeing action in Tennessee and Alabama during the campaign of 1864/65 he was mustered out of the Army at San Antonio, Texas on December 13, 1865 with the rank of Principal Musician, having been promoted and transferred to the regimental band on June 28th of that same year. He played the fife and the drum in the regimental band. He was honorably discharged from the army on January 3, 1865 at Indianapolis, Indiana.

Author's Note: The illness for which Clark Huffman was hospitalized in Louisville, Kentucky in the fall of 1862 was probably pneumonia. The health problems he incurred later in life that affected his left side was thought to be "caused by the pneumonia he contracted while in the army." As discussed above, that turned out to be heart disease.

Actions of the 51st Indiana Regiment

When Jonathan Clark Huffman, alias John H. Taylor, joined the 51st Indiana Infantry at Indianapolis, the unit was in the process of being reorganized. Five months earlier the regiment, under Col. Abel Streight, had been forced to surrender to Confederate forces commanded by Gen. Forrest near Gaylesville, Alabama. The whole force had been consigned to rebel prisons where the officers were treated with great severity. After being kept prisoners for some time, the enlisted men were paroled for exchange, and went into a parole camp at Indianapolis until their exchange was effected. In November of 1863, the regiment was exchanged, and at once returned to the field, joining the army at Nashville, Tennessee. On the 9th of February, 1864, Col. Streight escaped from the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, by means of a tunnel, after 10 months imprisonment.

During the campaign of 1864, the regiment did duty at Chattanooga, and after the occupation of Atlanta, moved to that place where it remained until late in the year. When the Fourth Corps moved northward, the 51st was part of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division of that corps, reaching Pulaski, Tennessee in November of 1964. When Gen. Hood's Confederate Army advanced toward Nashville, it fell back toward that place. On the 15th of December, the 51st Regiment participated in the Battle of Nashville, and afterward joined in the pursuit of the routed rebels, going as far as Huntsville, Alabama. Here it remained until March of 1865, when it moved with the Fourth Corps into East Tennessee. About the 1st of May, it returned to Nashville. In June the regiment was moved on transports to New Orleans with the Fourth Corps, and from there was transported to Texas, landing on the coast. It then marched into the interior of Western Texas as far as San Antonio, where it remained until December.

"Regiment mustered out December 13, 1865. Regiment lost during service, one officer and 55 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded, and six officers and 202 enlisted men by disease. Total 264." (Dyer's Compendium, pages 662-981)

After much correspondence with the U.S. War Department and the Commissioner of Pensions, Jonathan Clark Huffman was successful in obtaining his Veteran's Pension of $30.00 per month, approved on June 19, 1912, (Pension No. 701938). On October 17, 1917, two years after his death, Annie O. Huffman applied for a Widow's Pension, which was approved, and she was granted $30.00 / month (Certificate No. 827222) which she collected until her remarriage to Stephen F. Knego on March 20, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois.

On December 12, 1935, Annie O. Knego filed an affidavit for reinstatement of the pension formerly granted to her as the widow of Jonathan C. Huffman, alias John H. Taylor. Her second husband had died in Lockport Township, Will County, Illinois on October 12, 1935. At that time, Annie Knego was 59 years old.

Within two weeks after her husband died in 1915, Annie applied for a Widow's Pension. (Claim No. 1061586) A pension was granted on June 28, 1917 for $30.00 per month (Certificate No. 827222). Shortly after this date, Annie moved away from Cave City, Kentucky and may have gone to St. Louis, Missouri. It is known that at some point she worked for a while in a coat factory in St. Louis.

She married again in Chicago, Illinois on March 20th, 1924 to Steve F. Knego. The marriage license lists him as 33 years old and Annie as 26 years old, although she was actually 48 years old at the time. In July of 1924 they were living in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Family history says that Knego was somewhat of a lady's man and not to be trusted. At any rate the marriage was not a successful one. He died at 44 years of age on October 12, 1935, after undergoing an operation for acute appendicitis at the Illinois State Penitentiary at Joliet. It is not known if he was there as a prisoner. His death record lists his occupation as an insurance salesman. He was born in Dubrovnick, Austria.

On November 26, 1935, Annie Knego applied for re-instatement of her widow's pension, which had been relinquished when she married Knego. At the time of her pension application, during the months of November 1935 through January 1936, she lived at 1018 Cass Street in Joliet, Illinois. On January 15, 1936 she was notified that her pension was approved, and she was awarded a stipend of $30.00 per month.

By the late 1930's or early 1940's Annie had returned to Cave City, Kentucky where she lived until her death in 1956. For a while she lived with her daughter, Manie, after her son-in-law died. On September 5, 1946, when she turned 70 years of age, her widow's pension was increased to $40.00 per month. Annie Farrell Huffman Knego died on December 18, 1956 at the age of 80 years old. She is buried in the Cave City cemetery next to her daughter.

Albert Huffman (1823-1892) was the eldest son of Ambrose Huffman, Jr. and his wife (and first cousin), Elizabeth Huffman. He was an early member of the old Greenbriar Christian Church, located about one mile and a half south of Nobob, Kentucky in Barren County. Albert Huffman and his wife, Eliza Jane Nunnally, had nine children, including Virgil and Grant Huffman, the two brothers who left Barren County in the late 1800's to prospect for gold and silver in Alaska and the Yukon Territories.

The early Deed Books of Barren County show that in 1845 and 1849 Albert Huffman purchased tracts of 60 acres and 40 acres, respectively, located on Nobob Creek, from the estate of Teter Huffman.

" Albert lived in the old two story Huffman home, reportedly built by Henry Huffman. The chimney cornerstone, which is dated 1808, is in the personal possession of Dr. Oren A. Beatty of Louisville, Ky., as of Oct. 6, 1992. Albert Huffman was a cabinet maker and farmer. He had much mechanical ability, which he probably inherited from his German ancestors. His shop stood a short distance south of the old home and was equipped with every available tool for cabinet making and blacksmithing. It is said he could make anything from iron or wood. Albert Huffman died on September 17, 1892, and his Will is transcribed below:

Know all men by these presents that I Albert Huffman, a resident of Nobob Postoffice in the County of Barren and State of Kentucky, and by occupation a farmer, being of sound mind but weak in body, and realising the certainty of death and the uncertainty of life, do hereby make this my last will and testament revoking all former wills.

1st. I give my body to the earth from which it came and my spirit to God who gave it.

2nd. I give, devise and bequeath my estate and property, real and personal, as follows, that is to say after the payment of all my just debts and obligations, I want and desire that my four daughters Helen Baity, Minnie Huffman, Cora Huffman and Bettie Huffman shall be made equal out of the proceeds of my Estate with Amanda Hodges. I desire that my two sons Virgil and Ambrose Huffman shall be made from my estate equal with my son Grant Huffman. I desire that if my son Grant Huffman shall look after and care for me with that will and affect
